Making Justice
Work For You

Don’t Underestimate The Costs Of A Traffic Ticket

When a police officer pulls you over for a traffic violation, it may initially seem like nothing more than a minor headache. Many drivers simply pay the fines and admit their guilt without considering hiring a lawyer to defend against the citation.

The costs of a traffic violation can far exceed the initial fine of a ticket. Your insurance premiums may spike dramatically for a citation and these higher premiums may last for several years. Additionally, multiple infractions can quickly accumulate. These can lead to heavy fines or a license suspension or revocation.

At Duke & Heath, Attorneys at Law, we work to protect our clients’ freedom and future following traffic violations and other criminal charges. From our Carrollton office, we work with drivers throughout west Georgia who have received a citation for:

  • Speeding
  • Reckless driving
  • Driving with a revoked license
  • Driving with a suspended license
  • Driving without insurance
  • Leaving the scene of an accident
  • Illegal street racing
  • Vehicular homicide

Understanding Georgia’s Points System

Drivers convicted of a traffic violation will receive a certain number of points against their license. Some offenses that are seen to be more minor, such as improperly using a travel lane, will only result in one point. The most serious citations, including aggressive driving and driving at least 34 mph over the speed limit, carry six penalty points.

The only way that a driver can reduce the number of points on their record is to complete a defensive driving course. This can remove up to seven points, although you can only do this once every five years. If a driver accumulates 15 or more points in a 24-month period, they will face a license suspension.

Our attorneys will help you understand the possible implications of your traffic citation and will do everything possible to mitigate the negative consequences. If your current license is suspended or revoked, we will work to restore your driving privileges as quickly as possible.
