Common children's sports injuries

Fall is right around the corner and that means back to school and the beginning of some of your kid's sports seasons. Playing sports is a great way for your kids to learn teamwork and other valuable skills. However, youth sports can be dangerous too. As with many physical activities, kids are at risk for injury when playing sports.

As a parent you want to keep your kids safe as much as possible. Here is what you need to know about common youth sports injuries and what you can do to keep your kids safe, healthy and happy.

What are common youth sports injuries?

Unfortunately, there are many different types of sports injuries children may suffer from. Noticing the signs of injury can be important since your kids may not bring them to your attention immediately. Here are a few to watch out for:

  • Eye injuries - i.e. scratched corneas
  • Concussions
  • Broken bones and fractures
  • Joint sprains
  • Overuse injuries - injuries caused by repetitive motions or stress
  • Re-injuries

What can you do to protect your kids?

Though sometimes injuries may happen despite your best efforts to prevent them, there are many ways you can be proactive in protecting your children when playing sports.

  • Make sure all equipment fits your child - provide your child with the correct size of shoes, gloves etc.
  • Using proper safety equipment where necessary - i.e. helmets, pads, mouth guards, protective eye-wear etc.
  • Meet safety standards - fields and courts should be adequately maintained without holes or cracks

Watching your kids play sports can be exciting and rewarding, but their safety should be most important. There are many ways you can help your kids enjoy their sports and avoid injury. Taking proper precautions and being vigilant can help your kids stay happy and healthy.
