3 tips for commuting safely on your bicycle this summer

There is no better time than the summer season to commute to and from work on your bicycle. Not only does this allow you to enjoy the outdoors, but you're able to save money on the cost of gasoline. Also, you may find it more time-efficient to travel to and from your destination.

There's a big difference between commuting on your bicycle and commuting safely on your bicycle. Here are three tips you can follow to lessen the likelihood of an accident:

  • Ride in the bicycle lane, when available: If a bicycle lane is available to you, ride here as opposed to in traffic or on the sidewalk. If there isn't a bicycle lane, you're better off mixing in with cars. Remember, the safest place on the road is right in the middle of the action, not the shoulder or sidewalk.
  • Wear the appropriate safety gear: Many commuters avoid this, because they don't want to mess up their hair or go through the hassle of storing their gear upon arriving at work. This is a mistake. If you're going to commute on your bicycle, get into the habit of wearing the appropriate safety gear every time. This includes but is not limited to a helmet, gloves, and the right shoes.
  • Beware of the door zone: Moving cars aren't the only ones that can cause an accident. A driver or passenger that opens their door into your lane of travel is extremely dangerous, as this can cause a head-on collision. Take extra caution if you're riding on a street where vehicles are parked.

The nice thing about these tips is that they're easy to implement and follow. Once you get into the habit of doing these things, it will become second nature.

In the event that you're injured in a car-bicycle accident, move out of traffic and immediately call 911. You may need to administer first aid until paramedics arrive.

After you receive treatment and discuss your prognosis with your doctor, review all applicable insurance policies and make note of the many ways you can seek compensation from the negligent driver. You have legal rights as a bicyclist in Georgia, and you want to protect them at all costs.
