Minor to serious injuries can occur in car wrecks

On Behalf of | Dec 10, 2019 | Personal Injury

The force of a car wreck can cause significant damage. This is true of the property that’s involved, as well as the humans who occupy the vehicle. When you are in a car that’s struck by another vehicle, you are at risk of suffering injuries. These can vary greatly from minor cuts and scrapes to catastrophic spinal cord injuries.

One of the most important things to remember when you are involved in a crash is that you should seek out medical care even if you don’t think that there is anything serious going on. It is possible that some injuries are hidden, so you must do what you can to try to prevent them from worsening.

Minor injuries

You might only suffer from minor injuries like bruises and scrapes. Some cuts require stitches, but they aren’t usually very serious until they are extremely long or deep. You do have to worry about infection when you have an open cut, so watch for signs of one. These include the area becoming more painful, red, swollen or hot.

Bruises aren’t typically much to worry about. There might be a problem if it is across your chest or stomach. These areas can mean that you have internal injuries. While this is uncommon, it is a good idea to have a thorough checkup to ensure that there isn’t something more serious than a mark on the skin going on.

Moderate injuries

Moderate injuries are those like broken bones. These are usually painful, but they aren’t typically life-threatening. In the case of a fracture, you are at an increased risk of a serious infection if the skin is broken due to the break. This type of open fracture can allow germs to get into the body, which can lead to major problems.

Serious injuries

Serious injuries, including those to the spinal cord and brain, can dramatically alter the course of your life. They are sometimes fatal. Any pain in the back or head should trigger a medical evaluation because this can signal something that requires immediate medical care is going on.

When you are involved in a crash, you have to think carefully about what you’re going to do next. If the crash was due to the other driver operating the vehicle negligently, you might opt to pursue a claim for compensation. This can help you to minimize the monetary damages you have after the crash.
